RS JAZZ CHOIRS
I am director of vocal music for Valley Southwoods Freshman High School, and I direct the Treble Clef Chorus, Bass Clef Chorus, Southwoods Singers, and Syncopation, the vocal jazz ensemble. Prior to Southwoods, I was the director of vocal music for Fort Dodge Senior High School.
I graduated with honors from Iowa State University in 2005 with a B.M. in Vocal Music Education. While at Iowa State I performed with the Cantamus Women’s Choir, the nationally recognized Iowa State Singers, and the vocal jazz ensemble, Off the Record, when not at school, I help lead sectionals for the Matins Choir at Plymouth Congregational Church in Des Moines.
To anyone who is interested in beginning a jazz choir: It’s so rewarding! As a director of a 9th grade only vocal jazz ensemble, I see my singers every year go from tentative and unsure of themselves to singing out and having confidence—and it transfers to my other ensembles, too.
